My Letter to Editor

Just a post on my letter to editor which was published in the Sun Daily newspaper:

Rectify flaw in Kedai Rakyat

I REFER to “Kedai Rakyat 1 Malaysia products not cheap” (Nov 10), which reported that not all products at the outlet are as cheap as they are claimed to be.

This can be a halt to the government’s efforts to provide affordable goods to citizens. It is disappointing to find that some hypermarkets are offering products at cheaper prices.

No doubt Kedai Rakyat do have goods which are cheaper than other shops, but this latest discovery has somewhat distorted the ideal behind Kedai Rakyat.

It should not be an issue if certain products have prices equivalent to, or as per the report, higher than items sold at hypermarkets. However, such details should be made clear prior to the launching of Kedai Rakyat so as to avoid criticism.

Despite that, the concept still remains a sound solution to helping consumers shop for less expensive groceries. Now that doubts have been raised over the prices, action needs to be taken to rectify the flaw before consumers lose faith in what could be a more frugal way of living.

The obvious step to be taken is to revise the prices, coinciding them with the RM40 million government subsidy provided for the Kedai Rakyat. An explanation on the price differences between Kedai Rakyat and hypermarkets is also vital in restoring consumer confidence.
